Why Are Micro-Businesses So Important?

Lord Young of Graffam

Lord Young of Graffam

According to Lord Young the contribution of micro-businesses to the economy is huge.  In 2008 there were 4.26 million private sector businesses in the UK, by the end of 2016 this number had increased to 5.5 million. A massive 96% (5.3 million) were micro-businesses with less than ten employees. Collectively they accounted for 32% of private sector employment and 19% of private sector turnover.

One key factor contributing to this growth is the impact of the internet. Small firms are increasingly adopting technology to innovate, reduce costs, raise finance, seek advice and guidance, and gain access to new markets. These firms are realising that the internet and digital technology is no longer an optional extra, but a key driver to growth.

But Here's The Problem...

The global digital marketing skills gap means there are just not enough skilled people to go round.  Large organisations with big budgets attract the best digital talent with huge salaries and the lure exciting state of the art projects to work on.  At the other end of the scale micro-businesses operating on a shoestring simply cannot compete with their corporate rivals yet they still need the same digital skills.

This means the vital role of modern marketing often falls squarely on the shoulders of the entrepreneur or micro-business owner - along with everything else they need to do to run their business.  These heroes of the modern economy risk everything to build their business, achieve their goals, create jobs, drive the economy, and make a difference.  Yet many have little or no digital marketing skills or experience.

Question Why Character

So What's The Solution?

If small firms are to survive and prosper in the digital age, as Lord Young suggest, they simply must acquire the marketing skills they need to be competitive.  The bottom line is that if entrepreneurs and micro-business owners cannot recruit or buy in these skills they need to acquire these essential skills themselves – there is no other option!

But there is just so much ‘out there’ where do you start?  What should you do first?  Do you actually need a website or will a Facebook page suffice?  How do you build an online presence that attracts new qualified customers without wasting money? How does everything actually work and how does it all fit together? These are just a few of the questions the 21st Century Marketing System has been specifically designed to answer and help entrepreneurs and micro-business owners discover and take advantage of everything modern marketing has to offer.
